The garden is rapidly running into a sea of fallen leaves, thanks to the beech and sycamore trees that were there long before our house existed. It’s a busy time, trying to clear them as fast as they fall, and I was reminded that this time last year, my back was so bad that I was no help whatsoever in helping to clear them. Fortunately, I’m on the mend at last.
I finally started seeing a chiropractor earlier this year to sort out my back pain, and it was all going rather well at first. However, the realignment work meant that my muscles were forced to work in ways that they hadn’t for over a year, and so an exercise programme was introduced. It was definitely having a positive impact, but then suddenly, it just seemed to stop working and get worse again. I knew that I had to persevere but struggled to find the motivation to continue.
I was too busy feeling sorry for myself instead of recognising just how far I’d already come. One setback at a crucial point can leave us wanting to give up, even when we are close to success. What makes us sabotage our own plans, and what can we do to set ourselves up for success rather than failure?
When you become aware of the fact that you are getting in your own way, it frees you to be able to do something about it. I had to make a decision – give up and stay in pain, or find a new approach that would work for me. So, I joined a gym. I also discovered something called Body Balance – a cross between Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates – and even though I can’t do all the moves, I’m feeling stronger each week, and even enjoying the classes! Success was in my grasp all along. I’m just so pleased that I didn’t give up.
Until I see all the leaves that need clearing….
